What is Repentance?

Meaning: The reversal of mind; to care afterwards Accurately Defining the Word in Application: When one accepts the Finished Work of Jesus Christ they are believing in the sufficiency of Jesus’ sacrifice for sins on their behalf (John 3:16). All too often this belief is confused with an expectancy of a change of life, and this may occur, but the reality is that the repentance that is taking place is a changing of the mind concerning oneself and their sin (John 5:24). To think you can overcome sin on your own goodness or deal with sin without God is clearly…

Happiness is a Choice

I had a friend who I suspect was trying to justify leaving his wife. He said “I haven’t been happy in my relationship for a long time.” I didn’t really know what to say at the time, but I did share with him that the ‘butterflies’ don’t stay. You are going to feel butterflies at some point. You’ll feel it as a result of your anticipation to be around someone or someplace. People think that butterflies are proof that you are in love. What it really is is proof that you are excited and really anticipatory of the rendezvous. It…

Romans 1:1-7 Application

The first seven verses of the book of Romans have a three-fold purpose. First, it is a salutation mostly in verses 1 and 7, where you will find the salutation terms such as its opening with the simple author name “Paul,” and later where it ends with “Grace to you and peace”. The second purpose is to express how the Gospel is preached, understood and believed when they go soul-winning. Finally, he presents the Romans with who they are according to God in what we refer to as positional truth. In verse one Paul calls himself a servant or bond-slave…

1 Samuel 2:22-25

1 Samuel 2:22, “Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.”  Lay in Hebrew is shakab which means to lie down, to lodge or to have sexual relations.  Assembled in Hebrew is tsaver which means to amass, to assemble, perform, collect or to do sacred service.  The general sense of the word is to render a service.  The tabernacle had a religious order or women who served at the door.  They gave up…

Laos

Laos

Officially, it is called the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.  It is a mountainous, tropical, land locked country in Southeast Asia.  It is bordered by Burma and China to the North, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south and Thailand to the west.  Modern day Laos comes from the ancient kingdom of Lan Xang, which was established in the 14th Century.  Lan Xang had influence for 300 years that controlled all of the current Laos, some of Thailand and some of Cambodia.  In the late 19th Century, it came under French rule.  In 1907 a treaty was signed which…

James 2:12-13

James 2:12-13, “So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.   For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.”        James 2:12, “So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.”  Speak in Greek is laleo which means to talk at random. The emphasis is that something was spoken not on what was spoken.  Do in Greek is poieo which means to make, to give someone or something a certain quality, to appoint or…

BAPTISM-WATER

ORIGINS:       Baptism is not something that was invented by Christians as something new, just as Jesus did not invent a new religion.  John The Baptist was baptizing before Jesus began His public ministry.        Biblically, baptism has beginnings in the Old Testament.  Leviticus 8:6 shows Aaron and his sons being ritually cleansed by water when they first became priests.   Leviticus 16:4 tells us that they needed to be ritually cleansed before putting on their priestly garments.  Numbers 31:21-24 says that anyone touching a dead body must be cleansed with water.        Jewish tradition uses a ritual called Mikveh…

Seinfeld Changed My Life

“Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me; do: and the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:9 When people think about what they are supposed to do as a Christian they have the tendency to think about their behavior. They try to understand some sort of moral center and as long as they obey this right or wrong they think that they are okay. I find it interesting that some people assume what the standard of God is without knowing anything the Bible says in context. Paul says he will…
